My students give themselves “the finger” . . .

Take the index finger of one of your hands, and point toward the bridge of your nose. Your finger ought to be at least 10 inches away from your face. Now, can you see what the finger is pointing to?” he asked.

No —of course not.” I replied, with a puzzling look.

So how do you know who you are, all of you, if you can’t see what the finger is pointing to? How do you fully know ‘you’ when you see only parts, aspects, and rarely ever, the whole ‘you’?” he inquired.

I secretly loved what he was causing me to consider. Something else was required, for me to know myself! We are all, 'in-relationship' beings! My mind began quickly associating information . . .

Exactly! Did he read my mind?! “You are always in relationship to something—isn’t oxygen a must?” He added.

The participants I facilitate—kids to adults—now “give themselves the finger.” Then they realize—perhaps for the first time—they are more than they previously imagined.
